  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his fifth goal since moving to Barcelona
  • Ousmane Dembele got his first league goal for nine months during La Liga clash

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored again as Barcelona went crazy for the third game running, thrashing Athletic Bilbao 4-0 to go back to fourth in the table.

Barça have now scored 12 goals in their last three games with Xavi team’s attacking play proving too much for Valencia, Napoli and Athletic in the space of a week.

Athletic had the third-meanest defense in La Liga but they were beaten by Aubameyang on 37 minutes after he connected with a loose ball in the area after Gerard Pique’s header came back off the bar.

Ferran Torres had a shot saved and Gavi blazed over after being set up by Pedri as Barcelona failed to extend their lead. That all changed in the second half once Ousmane Dembele came on.

There were still some whistles for the France winger who has run down his contract but he turned the jeers to cheers with a brilliant goal and two superb assists as Barcelona ran away with the game late on. He cut in from the left and fired a shot over Unai Simon to make it 2-0.

Memphis Depay and Luuk de Jong came on late on and both scored courtesy of Dembele assists. The De Jong goal also owed plenty to the brilliant Pedri who had wriggled away form Iñaki Williams and Unai Vencedor before playing a sensational long crossfield pass to Dembele who crossed for the Dutch striker to score.

His compatriot Memphis remains Barcelona’s top scorer with nine goals so far this season after making it four from another Dembele assist.

Pedri may just have shaded supersub Dembele for man of the match but there will be huge praise once more for Aubameyang who has made an incredible start to life under Xavi. His four goals in his first four games matches Romario and Rivaldo’s start for Barça.

‘I’m not surprised by the effect the new players are having,’ said Xavi after the game. ‘I’m really happy. We have brought players to the club who can score goals. They are players that make a difference. And we have got Dembele back and he is scoring goals too.’

Asked if Dembele could end up staying Xavi said: ‘That’s up to him and the club but I have always defended him. He came on today and he changed the game. He is always professional.’

The Barcelona coach had words for Pedri too who shone in midfield. ‘He reminds me of [Andre] Iniesta,’ he said before adding that the team would keep trying to climb places in the table.

‘We rule nothing out. We are fourth now and we are going for third. Then we will try to get into second place and if we can reach the leaders we will try to do that.’
