Endgame & Justice League receive special Oscar recognition

Superhero movies are in a better and more prominent place than ever in the 21st century, thanks in particular to the dawn of the “cinema universe era”. Overwritten by blockbuster team-up movies like Avengers: Endgame from Marvel Studios and Zack Snyder’s Justice League from Warner Bros., fans have no shortage of heroes to celebrate on the big screen.

For all of the success that Marvel and DC have had financially and through fan reception, one arena where neither company has found the success they desire is the Academy Awards.

Marvel’s biggest Oscar success came with it Black Panther, who won three gold trophies in the seven categories in which he was nominated at the 2019 proceedings. The following year, DC won the Oscar lottery with Todd Phillips jokerwho walks away in 2020 with a whopping 11 nominations and wins in the Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir) categories.

For 2022, the Oscars are changing things up a bit, adding a few purely fan-voted awards, including Best Movie Cheer Moment. Five films from the past two decades have moments vying for this unique honor, including a trio of showstoppers from Marvel and DC.

Endgame, Justice League and Spidey, oh my god!

For the 94th Academy Awards, The Academy recognized five films for the newly introduced Movies Cheer Moment award, to be announced during the ceremony on March 27th. The list included scenes from 2019 avengers: endgame, as well as 2021s Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Snyder’s four-hour cut of justice league made the list with Barry Allen’s universe-saving moment at the end of the film entitled “The Flash Speed Force”. This featured Ezra Miller’s fast hero running so fast he reversed the passage of time to stop the Unity and save his Justice League teammates.

As for Marvel, the climax of the Infinity saga is presented when Chris Evans’ Captain America finally exclaimed: “Avengers Unite!” Facing an army of dozens of heroes, many brought back to life following Bruce Banner’s Infinity Gauntlet Snap, the Avengers charged into battle against the Mad Titan, Thanos Avengers: Endgame.

2021 brought another landmark moment for the MCU as Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men joined the fray Spider-Man: No Way Home. The three web-slingers battled villains from across the multiverse and banded together to save their worlds while posing side-by-side on the Statue of Liberty.

The other two nominees were Jennifer Hudson’s 2006 musical number And I’m Telling You dream girl and Keanu Reeves dodging bullets in slow motion as Neo in the 1999s The Matrix.

Which Marvel/DC Movie Will Win Oscar Recognition?

Looking at the Marvel and DC movies that have made a name for themselves with general viewers, these nominations perfectly encapsulate the best moments from both comic book movie giants.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League was already at the center of some unfortunate news with the Oscars being ineligible for the Fan Favorite Award despite such a great reception. Thankfully, there will be an opportunity to shine with that award when the film’s climax comes back into the conversation for one of the best comic book moments in recent memory.

For Marvel Studios, arguably two of the most memorable scenes in the MCU’s 14-year history find their way into discussion, in two of the six highest-grossing films ever made. Fans could see the largest group of Avengers in history banding together for a year while all three cinematic Spider-Men did the same thing two years later, breaking both the internet and fandom.

As of now, there’s no way to track the voting numbers with only about a month until the award ceremony at the Oscars 2022. No matter who wins, to see that three of the five nominees for the award come from comic book movies is a milestone for the industry as a whole.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be streamed on HBO Max meanwhile Avengers: Endgame is available on Disney+. Spider-Man: No Way Home will be available for the home version on March 22nd.
