Nicolas Cage’s latest project The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent has received a slew of rave reviews after its premiere at a film festival this month.

The actor, 58, plays a fictionalized version of himself in the film, who attends the birthday party of a dangerous superfan, played by Game of Thrones’ Pedro Pascal, 46.

The film debuted at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas just days ago – and the project has since garnered rave reviews from critics who’ve seen it.

It was so well received by the select panel of critics upon premiere that it currently holds a rare 100 percent “fresh” rating on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

At the time of writing, the comedy film has 15 reviews on the platform, currently there is no feedback from a general audience as it has not been released in theaters.

Reviews – uploaded in recent days – have been polite, with one review saying the film “will leave a grin on your face”.

Rotten Tomatoes divides films into three categories based on critics’ feedback versus audiences’ reviews. Those with less than 60 percent positive ratings are “lazy.”

However, those who score between 60 and 100 percent – like Cage’s new film – are considered “fresh”, although they can later be upgraded to certified fresh status.

“Gepr├╝ft Fresh” is reserved for films that have a score between 75 and 100 percent but have been rated by at least 80 critics. It remains until the score drops below 70 percent.

This means that if the unbearable weight of massive talent continues to receive rave reviews as more critics upload their feedback, it could become “certified fresh”.

A summary reads, “Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictional version of Cage must accept an offer of $1 million to attend a dangerous superfan’s birthday party.”

It teases that things take a “wildly unexpected turn” when Cage is recruited by a Secret Service agent – played by Tiffany Haddish, 42 – and must channel his “most iconic and popular” characters to save himself and his loved ones.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is due out in the UK on April 22nd.
