Shortly after the bombs detonated in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, Oppenheimer began campaigning for nuclear weapons control to avert nuclear war with Russia.

He was appointed chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, although he was also a target of the House Un-American Activities Commission.

Oppenheimer died of throat cancer in 1967 at the age of 62 after years of smoking cigarettes.

They will also produce with his wife Emma Thomas and their longtime collaborator Charles Roven through his company Atlas Entertainment.

Universal Pictures has set the Oppenheimer release date for July 21, 2023.

The date comes about two weeks before the anniversaries of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which took place on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively.
