Pierce Brosnan admits he hates James Bond

When it comes to James Bond, there is often a heated debate about who was the best actor in the gig. There are a few to choose from, with some of the more iconic people in the game getting a crack at 007 over the years. But not everyone loved their time in tuxedos and drinking martinis. You see, it’s a heavy burden to shoulder one of the most iconic characters to ever walk the big screen. So you could forgive these guys for worrying about performance when all was said and done. Pierce Brosnan has certainly thought about it, and he doesn’t look back too fondly on what he did.

Pierce Brosnan has expressed numerous times over the years that he feels he has done the James Bond character a disservice. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (via CheatSheet), Brosnan had said that there were a number of different things that bothered him about playing James Bond at the time. First of all, they “loathed” the “one-liners” the character was known for. It’s hard to blame him on the front lines, and the James Bond persona isn’t for everyone in that regard, especially some of the earlier iterations.

And later, in an interview with The Telegraph (also via Cheatsheet), Pierce Brosnan expressed that he doesn’t look back fondly on his days as James Bond. Though they said it offered him other opportunities later on, namely the notoriety and financial benefits, they don’t necessarily get to enjoy the time as a character. He said: “I have no desire to see myself as James Bond. Because it’s just never good enough… It’s a terrible feeling.’

This could be Pierce Brosnan exaggerating how poorly he really felt his portrayal of the character. Will he go down as the best James Bond of all time? Of course not. But I don’t think fans think they’ve done the franchise a massive disservice. That was at a time when films didn’t necessarily have a certain level of grit. So it makes sense that the studio wanted to play their version a little more in the middle.

Pierce Brosnan was the fifth actor to play James Bond in the franchise. He was followed by Sean Connery, George Lazenby (one film), Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton. Brosnan acted in a total of four films GoldenEye, tomorrow never dies, the world is not enough, and Die Another Day. They were far from the most celebrated of the group, but I don’t think anyone blames Brosnan for that fate. The writing was a bit vanilla, and that lack of oomph definitely paved the way for what came next with Daniel Craig.

Now the franchise is looking for a new James Bond. With Daniel Craig finishing his enema no time to die, there will be a handover of the mantle for a new version of the character. This could certainly go in different directions. And while Pierce Brosnan may not look back on his time as 007 in a positive light, whoever joins next will be part of a special group. Not many actually have to embrace this iconic character.
