Royals: Prince Harry announces they will be attending the Invictus Games

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have been tipped to make a star appearance at next weekend’s Oscars to present the evening’s top honor.

The 37-year-old prince and his wife, 40, could be on stage at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood next Sunday night as part of the 2021 Academy Awards.

It is suggested that the couple will announce the winner of the Best Picture Award – which is the highest gong of the night and is traditionally unveiled at the end of the ceremony.

But Prince Harry’s performance on such a high-profile stage could draw contempt, however, as he made the eyebrow-raising decision to snub an upcoming memorial to the late Prince Philip – his grandfather – who died last year aged 99.

A source told The Sun about Harry and Meghan’s plans to present themselves at the Oscars, saying: “Obviously they were going to be a big hit this year and could use their performance to deliver an impassioned speech of their choice, now probably in the Ukraine.

“Show producers Will Packer and Shayla Cowan have put together some amazing A-list names for the stage and Harry and Meghan would be the icing on the cake.”

However, the source speculates that Prince Harry is unlikely to attend.

They add: “It would be seen as a final kick in the teeth for the royal family if he did – he’s too nervous to fly to London without police protection but happy to be there in front of a huge live audience at the Dolby Theatre stand in Hollywood. Not a great look.”

The Mirror has reached out to a spokesman for the couple for comment.

This year’s Best Picture nominees are Belfast directed by Kenneth Branagh, CODA directed by Sian Heder, Don’t Look Up directed by Adam McKay, Drive My Car directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Dune under directed by Villeneuve and King Richard directed by Zach Baylin.

Licorice Pizza directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, Nightmare Alley directed by Guillermo del Toro, The Power of the Dog directed by Jane Campion and West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg are also nominated in this category.

The 2022 ceremony – which celebrated the previous year’s best film – is expected to be a sweeping return to the pomp and ceremony of the Oscars.

Last year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a scaled-down event planned by viewers, which attracted a small live TV audience.

However, at the event later this month, a trio of icons – Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes – will join forces to host the event, while Beyonce and Billie Eilish are among those expected to perform during the night.
