“It’s a different vibe,” director Chris Miller said of the original Puss in Boots Movie. “What made it easier was that I really loved that character, and Antonio’s personality really dictated so many of the decisions that were made. We knew it was going to be an original story, we knew it was going to be a prequel. We immediately said, “There would be no Shrek, there would be no donkey. They won’t exist in this film.” We guarantee immediately that it will have its own world. It’s a different time. It’s a bit mysterious, we only know that it happened before he met her. That was liberalizing.”

These reboot plans became sequel plans again by 2019 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Co-director Bob Persichetti was appointed to helm Puss in Boots 2. He was replaced by Joel Crawford in 2021, just over a year after the film was subtitled The Last Wish.
