Former Celtic star Kris Commons has questioned Rangers’ decision to sign Amad Diallo on loan and believes the Manchester United youngster looks as though he’s ‘in the wrong movie’.
Much was expected of the talented winger when he joined the Scottish champions in January, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Ralf Rangnick.
The presence of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, allied to the emergence of Anthony Elanga, persuaded Diallo to seek regular playing time elsewhere, but he has struggled to make an impact at Ibrox.
After a dream debut against Ross County, when he scored within five minutes, the 19-year-old has failed to complete a full match and suffered the ignominy of being hauled off at half-time during the Old Firm derby a fortnight ago.
Diallo did score twice in a behind closed doors friendly against Brentford – a match which featured the returning Christian Eriksen – on Monday but Commons feels he is destined to fail with Rangers.
‘He had a great chance late in the game and hit the post. He could have squared the ball to Fashion Sakala who would have had a tap-in. That can be the difference in tight, stuffy games.
‘Van Bronckhorst knows Rangers can’t afford many more days like this in the title race.’
Commons also questioned the logic behind signing former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey from Juventus given his history with injuries and fitness setbacks.
The Wales international featured as a late substitute in last week’s landmark 4-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League, but played no part in Sunday’s draw at Dundee United which saw Rangers fall three points behind Celtic in the title race.
Commons added: ‘Given the manner of the performance in Dortmund, and the form of Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo and John Lundstram, I felt Aaron Ramsey might not get into Rangers’ strongest team. Glen Kamara seems to have lost his way slightly which might have opened up a door for Ramsey, but he wasn’t in the squad at all due to injury.
‘Time is running out for him to make any sort of appreciable impact at Ibrox. He was signed to make the difference in the title race, to help Rangers unlock stuffy defenses with his passing and vision.
‘This was exactly the kind of game where they’d have hoped he could help, but he wasn’t fit enough to play any part.’
