Sean Penn looks completely unrecognizable in Gaslit trailer

By James Brizuela | 16 seconds ago

gas lit is a limited series premiering on Starz. The series follows the events of the legendary Watergate scandal that shook the United States and led to Richard Nixon’s resignation from the presidency. The series features a star cast that includes Sean Penn, Julia Roberts, Patton Oswalt, Dan Stevens and Nat Faxon. The first trailer for the series has been released, showing Penn completely unrecognizable as Nixon’s closest adviser, John Mitchell. You can see his wild transformation below:

The opening of the trailer shows some of the cast while they are in their closets ready for their performances. Sean Penn was made to look older, taller and grayer. In all honesty, it hardly resembles him. He’s laughing and the double chin effect is sure to be a sight to behold. The series focuses on John Mitchell’s wife, Martha Mitchell, played by Julia Roberts. Martha came into the public eye during the Watergate scandal. Her husband, John, was President Nixon’s closest adviser during this time, but it was Martha who appeared to divulge details of the controversy behind Watergate. History buffs will know this as the time when Nixon hired some lackeys to break into the Democratic National Committee building.

The series promises to highlight some of the forgotten characters from this era and is set to be the incredible true story of one of the biggest scandals in American history. Having Sean Penn and Julia Roberts in the same movie will certainly prove that gas lit will be consistently wonderful. The trailer certainly shows the harrowing life that Martha had to deal with in order to reveal the truth to the press. There’s even a moment when she’s attacked and drugged in a hotel room. If this event was at the behest of her husband, it gets even more interesting. Martha was said to be one of the first whistleblowers Nixon named as involved in the burglary. A wave of consequences hit the Mitchells because of her presidential outing, with John having to choose his wife or Nixon. There’s even a moment when John slaps Martha, and she replies with, “My mom hits me harder than that.” Penn is certainly one of the best method actors in Hollywood, and that certainly goes for the anger he’s in trailer poses while looking exactly like John Mitchell.

gas lit will premiere on Starz on April 24, and the series will be eight episodes long. Joining Sean Penn as John Mitchell and Julia Roberts as Martha are Dan Stevens as John Dean, Betty Gilpin as Mo Dean, Shea Whigham as G. Gordon Liddy and Darby Camp as Marty Mitchell. While the tone for the series may be serious in nature, there are hints of dark comedy. The trailer somehow brings out the same humor that oozes out in Adam McKay’s Don’t look up. However, the Watergate scandal was certainly very real. This seems like the kind of show everyone should see.
