Spider-Man’s Zendaya sells seashells in tongue-twisting Super Bowl ad

Reimagining a classic nursery rhyme, Zendaya plays Sally who “sells seashells by the sea” for a Squarespace ad.

If you’ve had a hard time alliteration in your English class, you might appreciate the new Super Bowl commercial featuring Zendaya.

In an ad for Squarespace, Zendaya portrays Sally, the seashell seller from the well-known children’s song that begins with the phrase “Sally sells seashells by the seashore.” The sentence is a classic example of alliteration, the use of words that have similar sounds, repeating the opening “S” sound in each word along with the closing “L” sound. However, the commercial extends the rhyme and features Zendaya’s Sally as the leader in a thriving business.

The original nursery rhyme didn’t go to such random depths as the published ad. While the video details how Sally’s thriving business has expanded since she started using Squarespace, it also features segments from Zendaya, joined by others on the beach, which showcase shell necklaces, bracelets, earrings, themed dresses, and more. While the rapid growth of Sally’s shell business may impress viewers, the narrator, AndrĂ© 3000, manages to read a long, 36-second script with alliteration.

The full transcript of the ad, which is longer than the original phrase and nursery rhyme, can be read as follows:

Sally sold clams on the coast, but the clams didn’t sell that well. So Sally set up a shell shop on Squarespace. Soon their shells began selling serenity sessions, savory seaside snacks, even shoreline shellfish excursions. Sally’s shells were so successful that she sailed into the setting sun as a shell celebrity.

Zendaya’s Sally then concludes the long narration by saying, “Shucks!”

Whether Zendaya will return as MJ remains to be seen, but the actor is currently starring in HBO series euphoria, which is in the process of releasing its second season.
