Film director Steve McQueen is made a Knight Bachelor by Princess Anne at Windsor Castle as he attends the ceremony with his mother to discuss his new Blitz film

Steve McQueen was made a Knight Bachelor.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker and artist, 52, was knighted by the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle on Tuesday for services to art and film.

Sir Steve, who directed 12 Years A Slave, said he was “very happy” for his mother Mary, who attended the ceremony with him.

The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank bestowed upon a man who has been knighted by the monarch but has not been admitted as a member of any of the organized chivalric orders. it is part of the British honors system.

The widow director also got his next film, which is due to start production this autumn and will tell the stories of Londoners during the Blitz.

When asked what was discussed with Anne, they said: “We discussed upcoming projects that I’m doing – I’m doing a film called Blitz, and we talked about it.

“The Blitz is what we’re working on and will hopefully start sometime in the fall.

“It’s about London, from 1940 onwards, that’s what we’re trying to do and we’ll see how it develops.”

His drama 12 Years A Slave, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, told the story of a free black man in the United States who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.

Sir Steve became the first black filmmaker to win the Oscar for Best Picture in 2014.

He is also known for his 2008 period drama Hunger and the 2011 film Shame.

Sir Steve won the prestigious Turner Prize in 1999 and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the visual arts in 2011.

In 2020 he released Small Axe, a film series set in London’s West Indian community, and more recently he directed Uprising, a three-part documentary series exploring key events in race relations in Britain.

Of Small Ax they said: “It was about telling broader stories about British life and shedding light on a story that wasn’t given a platform.

“For me it was about getting it out in everyday life.”

Others recognized included Sara Rowbotham, a former health worker who uncovered a child sex abuse ring in Rochdale, Professor Sir Michael McBride, Northern Ireland’s chief medical officer, and former England football captain Gillian Coultard.
