Stunned house hunter thought she was in a ‘horror movie’ after spotting something very ‘scary’ while browsing home

A terrified house hunter thought she was living in a “horror movie” after stumbling upon a “creepy giant religious statue that looks like Nicolas Cage” while searching an empty lot.

Jess Hogan was looking at property online when she spotted the bizarre religious celebrity look-alike lurking in one of the rooms of the four-bed house in Poole, Dorset.

The life-size carved wooden statue shows Saint Francis of Assisi in flowing robes, with a rosary hanging around his waist and clutching a cross.

The 26-year-old said she’s clicked through the snaps of the virtually empty property, which is up for sale for £375,000, and was impressed.

But when she clicked the virtual tour option, psychology student Jess was stunned to spot the 6ft tall unexpected houseguest lurking in the living room, peering back at her.

Jess said the strange discovery “felt like the beginning of a horror movie,” with online commentators joking that the house must be haunted.

The seller of the property said the statue brought positivity into her life, but admitted it had the “shock factor” and made some “jump out of their skin” when they saw it.

Jess, from Poole, Dorset, said: “It was a bit of a shock to see an odd religious statue in one of the rooms – I just thought it was really funny.

“Because I did the virtual tour, it was literally like walking into the room and there was this very thing in the corner.

“It feels like the beginning of a horror movie – it’s like a warning sign that the house is haunted or that something bad has happened there.

“It’s almost like it’s the statue’s house and he has to stay there – maybe something bad will happen if you move him.” It probably comes alive at night.”

The large wooden statue is not visible in the promotional photos, only in the virtual tour, adding to the mystery of the “creepy” saint statue.

Jess said: “I have no idea why it’s there, it’s just out of place. The rest of the house was empty, which made it even stranger.

“I don’t know why they left that there or why they didn’t at least get it out for the pictures.”

Jess tweeted afterwards, “So I did a virtual house tour on Rightmove and ‘walked’ into a room and was greeted by this thing. Holy s**t.”

Other online commentators shared their horror at the unusual houseguest, with one saying it reminded her of Doctor Who’s Weeping Angels.

One wrote, “This thing comes to life 100 percent during the night,” and joked that the statue’s crucifix might be a hidden sword.

Another said: “It’s definitely going to be haunted.”

Meanwhile, another stunned commenter asked, “Is that Nic Cage?”

The seller of the property said: “It is a carving of St. Francis – the patron saint of children and animals.

“We found it in Bali and sent it back – it was so unusual compared to all the other Indonesian carvings…

“We’re not sure what to do with it now, so it ended up in the house. It will be the last thing we move as it weighs around 300kg.”
