Suicide Squad’s John Price was ordered not to read Peacemaker comics

Suicide Squad star John Cena says writer/director James Gunn advised him not to read comics while preparing for his role as Peacemaker.

The Suicide Squad Star John Cena said that writer/director James Gunn told him not to read any peacemaker comics to his role as an antihero.

“During my research, James said to me, ‘Don’t read the comics, read the script,'” Price said in an interview with GQ. “This is a comic book person who has a lot of existences out there from different people putting out comics about Peacemaker, so I’m just going to do my own thing.”

Cena went on to explain that he initially drew inspiration from real-life generals in the US military, such as George Patton and Douglas MacArthur, to shape his Peacemaker character. Peacemaker’s costume in particular caused him to “take orientation” from Patton “who was always the liveliest looking general in a photograph and why you should wear a lively uniform to lurk in the shadows, so to speak”.

However, Cena said he didn’t solidify his Peacemaker persona until filming began The Suicide Squad. “And I really felt drawn to Lee Army’s role full metal jacket, so I wanted to be that kind of persona,” Cena said. And it fitted the words, because Lee Army rattled off a litany of curses that would make anyone in this film proud, and he said it with such conviction and direction that it made sense. So, a few takes like this and finally James said, ‘No, wait. That’s not what Peacemaker is. He’s a stupid Captain America.’ And that was it… I wish he would have told me months ago.”
