Taika Waititi has a new show, and this entry in the director becomes a full-fledged co-star in the hilarious new pirate comedy for HBO and HBO Max. Our flag means death has just released a brand new trailer and from the quick 2:30 seconds on display we are treated to what appears to be What we do in the shadows on the high seas. Perennial prankster Rhys Darby takes on the role of Stede Bonnet, a socialite mistaken for pirates of the worst kind. One of the legendary pirates in these ranks is Blackbeard, portrayed by none other than Watiti. Check out the trailer below:
Taika Waititi is usually behind the camera for most of the shows and films they are involved in, usually taking on acting and directing duties. However, he will only produce the new show and play the dreaded pirate Blackbeard. The trailer features a slew of hilarious cases, including the aforementioned Blackbeard being whipped in his… cannonballs. You have to hand it to the makeup department as Taika looks amazing with a massive beard and lots of tattoos.
The hilarious new trailer takes a deeper dive into the lives of Stede Bonnet’s celebrities as they attempt to make sense of, or infiltrate, the lives of hardened pirates. Darby’s line about “killing with kindness” versus actually killing people is awesome. Taika Waititi has a little more bass in his voice than Blackbeard, but his dry humor still shines through. The cast is packed with comedy actors including Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon , Fred Armisen and Leslie Jones. This show will surely be a lot of fun.
Both Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi hail from New Zealand and this isn’t the first time the pair have worked together. Darby played a werewolf on the Waititi maggot What we do in the shadows Movie released in 2014. A follow-up series of the same name, also based on the film, first aired on FX in 2019. She currently has three seasons, with the fourth coming sometime in 2022. Simply put, all Waititi’s touches are gold, pirate pun intended. Both men are the perfect combination of hilarity and ridiculousness, and it’s nice to see them working together, especially as co-stars.
Our flag means death will air on HBO and HBO Max starting March 3, with three episodes releasing simultaneously. The following three episodes will be released on March 10th, with two more on March 17th and March 24th. The grand total for this first season is set at 10 episodes, but there will likely be another season once it airs. This is really a weird way of releasing episodes, but at least not everyone has to wait for a weekly episode release. Binge a few episodes at a time with this quirky release schedule. We should expect nothing less from Taika Waititi.
